Coega Dairy has been an environmentally friendly business since its inception seven years ago.

The company continuously investigates opportunities to improve its carbon footprint in the total value chain. Equipment and processes need to comply with specific standards related to carbon emissions and the impact on the environment.

The company’s logo “where technology meets ecology” and the business philosophy that green technology delivers farm fresh goodness, has been the cornerstone of Coega Dairy's drive to become more environmentally friendly.

The company recently partnered with NrG (Next Renewable Generation) and entered into a Solar Power Purchase Agreement. NrG will supply and maintain solar photovoltaic panels on available roof space of the Coega Dairy facilities. In this regard the company will control a portion of the energy future by embracing bespoke distributed generation sources dedicated and designed to meet energy needs.

During phase one of the project the annual yield from the solar plant (950kw) will be about 1400MWh and account for about 20% of the company’s electricity usage. Peak demand savings will be about 14% and the plant will reduce CO2 usage by more than 1 185 tons per annum. The financial savings will be substantial, especially with potential future price increases from Eskom.

Future environmental related projects include additional water savings projects, recyclable packaging material and further energy saving projects.
